LAURENCE CLARK (UK)
Not very much stand-up these days has the power to shock, to force a sharp intake of breath and to change minds. This does. - The Scotsman
Laurence Clark is an internationally-acclaimed comedian, presenter, writer and actor who has performed at the House of Commons, on the acclaimed British series Abnormally Funny People, on BBC and on a double-decker bus in Sheffield England. His observational, political stand-up and hidden camera footage demonstrate the endearing naivety and ridiculousness of human behavior by seeing the world through his eyes with humor and warmth.
Gooble Gobble We Accept Ya, We Accept Ya OneofUs!
Mat Fraser is a multidisciplinary performing artist and writer. Over the last 18 years, he has produced and been in theatre plays, a comically offensive musical, Live Art, TV documentaries and drama (recently American Horror Story), soap operas, side shows, music LPs (his current music project is a band, The Spazms), ‘Cripsploitation’ action films, disability film erotica, museum shows, lectures and key note speeches.
Fascinated by historical and contemporary issues related to disabled different bodies and their sorry portrayal in mainstream arts, he has created OneOfUs with his artist wife Julie Atlas Muz, ‘A loving cup of artistic agitation’. Their first production was an Internationally acclaimed adult reworking of Beauty and the Beast (UK tour, London, New York, Adelaide Arts Festival ), mixing Live Art, theatre, personal testimony and fairytale.
Over the last 25 years since the ADA was passed, I’ve watched disabled artists mature, attain fantastic professional heights of accomplishment, and soar with their work creating brilliant, often game changing art. Why then in mainstream arts productions, do we mostly only see portrayals of disability that don't reflect this reality? Still using the outmoded and damaging medical or charity models of disability that prevail on film and TV, still too often played by non disabled actors, still infused with the heroic, non threatening “inspiration porn” that flies in the face of our true reality, and still with the Oscars! “Inspiration Porn” is the term coined by Disability media activist Stella Young (RIP), where she derided being found inspirational for “being able to remember her name and getting up in the morning”. Stella's talk on this is one of the several seminal video pieces included in the Cripfest visual arts program.
However, in that time many incredible disabled artists & their creative partners have made work, careers, reputations, and sometimes waves, producing work that shows our reality and thus all of Society, refusing to accept the stubbornly outmoded & negative media imaging of disabled people, but instead remould our understanding of Disability in our Society, fashion it into the vibrant, exciting, and inclusive World that we strive to live in, as we continue to critique, laugh at, and highlight the Disability experience. From Hip Hop dance, theatre, striptease, cabaret, fine art and performance art, comes this assured movement of creative artists who are reshaping the notion of disability in our World. So, come along and celebrate it with us..at CRIPFEST!
- Mat Fraser, CripFest curator
Thanks to the kind assistance from The British Council, I’ve been lucky enough to curate this wish list of talented, professional, assured, accomplished, fantastic, amazing, celebrated, radical, outsider, Disability Artists from the UK and USA, to showcase quite how far we’ve come since The Telethon.
We are outsiders, with inclusivity at the heart of what we do. Traversing the world as radical artists looking for alternative ways to be inside, the main thrust of our work is to highlight, question and poke fun at the absurdity of normality, using a loving cup of artistic agitation. We accept you, one of us.
